In May 2016 we won our second National Visit England Gold Award at the prestigious Visit England Awards in March this year. Known as the ‘tourism Oscars” We won the Best Dog-Friendly Business in England category, the first time that this category has been part of the national awards. Needless to say we delighted with this, and the other awards below, and thank everyone involved, our guests for their generous reviews, the judges and the organisers.
We also had a truly memorable 2015/16 on the Awards front. Firstly we received a prestigious award from Visit England, the ROSE Award 2015 for outstanding customer service, awarded to the top 100 tourism business in England. We were presented with this in London by Visit England’s CEO, James Berresford. This was a great honour to win, in it’s inaugural year. Then, at the 2015 Visit Devon Tourism Awards, we won the following awards:
- Best Self Catering Business in Devon
- Best Dog Friendly Accommodation in Devon
- Runner up in Sustainable Tourism
- Visit Devon’s Winner of Winners
We received four beautiful glass trophies, all made at Darlington Glass, which are now proudly on display.
This topped an amazing week where we also won the ‘Enjoyed in Devon” Award from DEBI in a fabulous ceremony at the Met Office. our thanks to all involved. We were also finalists in the South West Awards, taking place at Exeter Cathedral on the 4th February, where we were awarded runners up in self-catering and sustainable tourism and were awarded the Outstanding Contribution to Tourism Award.
The history….. When we opened Higher Wiscombe in 2006 we were starting from scratch and needed to find independent ways of demonstrating our quality. We used independent awards to help benchmark our business against others, but also because entering them is a really positive exercise in looking at your business through others eyes.
Every year we are graded by the National Tourist Board, Visit England each year retain our Five Star grading. When the Gold Award was introduced for the very top Five Star establishments we have been awarded this every year too. We also won the national award for ‘Best Holiday Cottages’ from Visit England in 2007.
We also wanted to display our environmental credentials, so joined the Green Tourism Business Scheme where we hold the Gold award and also were awarded a Goldstar Award in 2014 for our ‘contribution to sustainable tourism.’
This year we re-entered the awards and as can be seen above have done really well this year at the 2015 Visit Devon Awards and at the DEBI awards as well as the prestigious Rose Award from Visit England, once again our thanks to all involved, particularly Pam Foden of Visit England, and Annette Burgess of Quality in Tourism, two great champions of quality.
We have also entered or been entered into a variety of quality, green and business awards over the years. See below for full details of these awards.
The various awards programmes have been really helpful in not only benchmarking our business but keeping us on our toes. Here is the history of our awards to date.
